We have a high prison population so thus we shouldn’t penalize criminals? How does this even make logical sense? Maybe we have a lot of criminals because our society is decaying. Which it very much is. Drug addiction is a separate issue. Crimes have victims, do they not matter? Rampant theft leads to businesses moving out of the area, which harms the community. There are plenty of reasons to punish this behavior.
- tomlockwood 5y ago> Maybe we have a lot of criminals because our society is decaying. Ok, so maybe addressing that will be more fruitful than baying for more punishment!
- AnimalMuppet 5y agoIt can be both/and, rather than either/or. We can try to fix a decaying society, and not let criminals run wild in the meantime.
- tomlockwood 5y agoOk, but characterizing criminals as "running wild" in the country with literally the most criminals behind bars, seems odd!
- josephcsible 5y agoNot every country has the same number of criminals total. Just because we have the most behind bars doesn't mean that we don't also have the most running wild.
- tomlockwood 5y agoAnd why does America produce more criminals? Can we address the root cause rather than the symptom?
- AnimalMuppet 5y agoOnce again: Let's address the root cause and the symptom. Not rather than. Both/and.
- tomlockwood 5y agoBut it'd appear that addressing the symptom by turning up the amount of incarceration, has not worked, since America has the most in the world.
