MoviePass 2.0 Wants to Track Your Eyeballs to Make Sure You Watch Ads
- beardyw 5y agoNot in the least bit creepy.
- js2 5y ago> MoviePass is relaunching as a web3-style application where users earn credits to go to the movies by watching ads. The new MoviePass will use facial recognition and eye tracking tech in your phone to make sure that you’re actually watching those ads. This article. > Whilst in his room, Bing sees an advert for WraithBabes featuring Abi. He cannot afford the merits to skip it, and a high-pitched noise sounds when he looks away from the screens, so he must watch. - atlasunshrugged 5y agoYou know, my gut reaction is that people would opt out because of the creep factor but maybe this is just another one of those things where people are willing to be essentially spied on with their data packaged and sold in return for discount (or sometimes free) services. Although since it's physical world and not pure digital tracking maybe it crosses a line with more folks.
- choward 5y ago> Spikes—wearing the standard black turtleneck, jeans, and tennis shoes associated with Steve Jobs and Elizabeth Holmes—announced that MoviePass is moving towards a system where people watch ads to earn virtual currency that they then spend on movies. What a joke. These people are parodies of themselves. > Spikes said that all of this will happen locally on the users phone. “Part of the direction we’re doing from a web3 perspective is, this is happening only on your phone, uniquely to you, and the credits that are earned are your credits that go into your virtual wallet that you get to spend,” he said. “So it’s your own money.” Creating something with it's own "currency" is all it takes to be web 3? And it's not "money". All it effectively is is a gift card that for some reason the decided to call virtual currency. Since they use the term "virtual wallet" I'm guessing it's using blockchain technology. What's the point? Who cares if you store the gift card itself on your phone instead of a pointer to your gift card on their server? So you can transfer your credits to someone else without Movie Pass knowing? Innovative! The fact that they're stored on your phone doesn't make them any more valuable. If theaters stop accepting these credits your credits are worthless no matter where they are stored. So really what I'm getting at is how is this any better than just paying someone with gift cards for watching ads?
- nikolay 5y agoI'm sure they would want to track my balls, too - if allow them to! People are really stupid to betray their own freedom and interest just to save a few bucks per month!
- maiuree 5y agoMost idiotic and counter intuitive thing u can do Your ad isn't hypnotizing, staring at it won't get u a penny more, just makes the person know your brand's product as the "shit product I stare at to get 40 cents an hour" Companies are forgetting that the ad psychology, adcology™, is much more important than simple glance counts
