I'm fairly sure that almost none of the "parmesan" cheese you can buy in a US grocery store is actually parmesan. I'd have to look it up, but I think the stuff that comes in a plastic shaker is mostly "filler" of some kind. If you want actual parmesan cheese in the US, you're probably looking for "Parmigiano Reggiano".
