We are talking really long term storage for data that might be valuable even after a decade or more. Also, the capture of such data is not so easy. Such considerations are applicable only if your thread model includes a nation state or a corporation with similar capabilities and long-term incentives.
- OJFord 5y agoInherently I would think someone (entity) doing this is not doing it in any particularly targeted manner, just like blasting out phishing attempts. I think it's less about personal threat model in the sense of 'who from', and more about how the value deteriorates with time (quickly and absolutely if it's a key that is rotated, for example; never at all (completely less embarrassment after some years, depending on jurisdiction) if it's a conversation about illegal activity).
- gostsamo 5y agoTo do it enmasse, you need lots of space. Like, a lot... Every year, when you review your expenses, you need to defend why you are spending millions for maintaining a large pile of rubbish in the vague hope that one day you will spend other millions to dig into this rubbish and not earn money from it but send some bastard to jail. So, it must be either national security issue, or other long-term valuable information that is worth paying to have chance at cracking.
