I think of all the famous brands that were once deeply loved by their customers:
Coke-a-Cola in the 1920s, and later
Cadillac in the 1940s and 1950s
Boeing warcraft during WW II, and commercial planes afterwards, much loved by pilots
The Sony Walkman of the 1980s
Marvel comic books in the mid 20th Century
DC comic books in the mid 20th Century
Johnson & Johnson baby powder, for at least a century
Coti perfume throughout the early 20th Century
Ralph Lauren in the 1980s/90s.
I could go on. I could make a very long list. There have been hundreds of brands who had a few decades when they were loved by their fans -- fanatical customers who were proud to associate with a given brand.
It is amazing to compare all that to the Facebook brand. The analogy to illegal drugs is a good one because, really, where else do you see a user base that uses a product this much, while hating the product?
