As an Italian with classical studies as my main background, I remember studying Pascoli in High School, and vividly remember this story. I could tell it was Pascoli already from the title! Amazing article.
Pascoli is dear to me, as he's known for gracing my uneventful province home town with a beautiful poem as well. I'm positively surprised that I still remember all of them from our task of memorizing them in elementary school as well.
There used to be A LOT of poetry in our kids-of-the-80s school curricula, now that I think of it. And I gotta say, I feel lucky for that.
- toyg 5y agoI didn't do much Pascoli, my teachers preferred more progressive poets like Montale (so depressing, lol) and Neruda. We did Carducci though (because you kinda have to in Bologna), Leopardi, Ungaretti (loads), and the old goliardi stuff - as well as the inevitable Dante. And then in English classes we were drowning in Romantic stuff. I didn't really enjoy it much, although I did try my hand at writing poetry - as any self-respecting 15-yo should. I do think it's disappointing that poetry doesn't find much space in modern media - which is the fault of modern poets as much as anyone though, a lot of contemporary material is boring and/or unreadable.
