> They also do not appear to reflect the values of most Canadians or most Canadian truckers: More than 80 percent of the Canadian public is vaccinated, including almost 90 percent of truckers, according to Canada’s minister of transport.
This is a completely dishonest characterization. The truckers are not anti-vaccine, they are against anti-vaccine MANDATE.
- WalterGR 5y agoThat Canada hasn’t seen similar protests for other forms of mandatory vaccination suggests that they are not simply anti-vaccine mandate.
- insickness 5y agoAgain, completely dishonest. Adults are not being policed on any other type of vaccination right now. You're not being forced to show polio vaccination status when you go to a restaurant. You're not being forced to prove flu vaccination to keep your job.
- WalterGR 5y agoThese trucker protests, led by the so-called “Freedom Convoy” now besieging Ottawa, began after the Canadian and U.S. government enacted a rule requiring cross-border truckers to be fully vaccinated in order to get into either of the two countries. -- Rolling Stone Is that incorrect? I’m not Canadian.
- insickness 5y agoSounds about right. This type of mandate is what the truckers are protesting. They aren't against vaccination, just the government forcing people to get vaccinated.
- all2 5y agoThat's like suggesting the rebellion in the American British colonies wasn't actually tax related because those kinds of issues had "never come up before". There's a threshold of what people will tolerate, and when that threshold is passed people will rebel. When you threaten a person's food, housing, or family that person will go down fighting. The mandates in Canada essentially outlaw working for those who are unvaccinated. Trudeau has made it abundantly clear that the "thumb-screws" approach to vaccines was going to be his only gambit. If the government can make not being vaccinated uncomfortable enough, then more people will get vaccinated. Similar approaches have been tried all across the world, to similar effect. Europe, especially Eastern Europe and the Nordic countries have seen massive protests as the measures for vaccines have become more strict. People generally will not tolerate threats against the things they value most.
