It’s a little more than that - basically, Third Room experiments with using Matrix as the existing server infrastructure to power the open metaverse. So you can take any Matrix server, point Third Room at it, and store all your assets in it (as glTF + WASM) while decentralising it across the wider Matrix network, and then use Matrix for the in-world VoIP and Video and Chat and other comms. So you get Matrix’s end-to-end-encryption and decentralisation and decentralised access control model for free - as well as all the comms protocol, to the extent that you don’t even need a dedicated game server.
It’s literally expanding Matrix’s concept of chatrooms to store and communicate open metaverse world data instead :)
