Welcome to Third Room – Open Metaverse on Matrix
- aahsoakah 5y agoThis was really interesting to see some kind of Matrix-Metaverse integration. I skimmed it and it seems to me that things are just going to be Matrix.org acting as a free host for metaverse content servers (doesn't really solve the users demanding other users to generate content they can freely consume problem), and a little bit of coding and tooling done to allow metaverse world deletions to work with existing matrix moderation code?
- Arathorn 5y agoIt’s a little more than that - basically, Third Room experiments with using Matrix as the existing server infrastructure to power the open metaverse. So you can take any Matrix server, point Third Room at it, and store all your assets in it (as glTF + WASM) while decentralising it across the wider Matrix network, and then use Matrix for the in-world VoIP and Video and Chat and other comms. So you get Matrix’s end-to-end-encryption and decentralisation and decentralised access control model for free - as well as all the comms protocol, to the extent that you don’t even need a dedicated game server. It’s literally expanding Matrix’s concept of chatrooms to store and communicate open metaverse world data instead :)
- kderbyma 5y agoworking on a similar concept - though with less a focus on 3D and more on 2.5D storytelling and world building. it's been a lot of learning, but so far it's been a great experience. I was thinking of building atop matrix or similar. Building the tools at the moment to speed up content development because that's what has been slowing me down.
