A lack of innovation saw Intel dethroned as the world’s largest chipmaker
- simonblack 5y agoHistory repeats it seems. Intel's first big success was the 8-bit 8080. That chip was dethroned by Zilog's Z80 which had a superset of the 8080's instruction set after Intel rested on its laurels. Then Intel burst forth with its next series, the x86 16-bit and 32-bit chips. Likewise it again rested on its laurels and was overtaken as an innovator by AMD's 64-bit instruction set. Recently, Intel has had problems with its newer chip manufacturing. It will very likely fall by the wayside as Asian RISC chips gain the ascendency. The chip world will look a lot different within the next 5-10 years.
