I don't get what's the big deal. Just unfollow everyone you connect with, disable all notifications, and check it once a week. That's what I do, and I see no "cringe". This way LinkedIn becomes just an "instant" messenger with a job board attached. You can't eliminate other people's "cringe" but you can shield yourself from it very easily.
