For the pixelbook you still had the option to disassemble your laptop and disconnect the battery instead of using the special cable, but that involved prying large and fragile rubber sheets off the bottom of your laptop. I did that to my pixelbook before I learned about this cable and it worked (in addition to leaving my pixelbook permanently disfigured because Google does not offer any replacement parts at all to anyone anywhere). I don't know if the battery-based option is still available for newer chromebooks.
