I have a friend in the UK facing 14 years in jail for 'online hate', his lawyers say realistically he'll get 2-4 years. As far as I know all he did was some harmless albeit ill-informed 'shit-posting'.
I don't condone, support or endorse his behavior but shoving him into the prison-industrial complex for most of his adult life just for some dumb memes is insane. Meanwhile murders, crimes, rapes, pedophile rings, drug dealers etc are all just conveniently ignored.
I think part of the problem is when you have 'metrics' you need to hit you start going for the low-hanging fruit.
