U.K. Officials Want Even More Power to Punish You for Being Mean Online
- new_guy 5y agoI have a friend in the UK facing 14 years in jail for 'online hate', his lawyers say realistically he'll get 2-4 years. As far as I know all he did was some harmless albeit ill-informed 'shit-posting'. I don't condone, support or endorse his behavior but shoving him into the prison-industrial complex for most of his adult life just for some dumb memes is insane. Meanwhile murders, crimes, rapes, pedophile rings, drug dealers etc are all just conveniently ignored. I think part of the problem is when you have 'metrics' you need to hit you start going for the low-hanging fruit.
- livinglist 5y ago14 years for shitposting? I mean what kind of thing did he post to get him 14 years in jail? this sounds really absurd
- uejfiweun 5y ago"They are operating under the inevitably abuse-prone assumption that these offensive comments cause psychological harm to people." I cannot wait for the day when Western society stops prioritizing the elimination of psychological harm, aka discomfort. It's a big world and there are bound to be some things and people out there that you react negatively to. If we just ban everything that people find offensive, we end up with a boring, homogenous grey blob of a world with no free speech, no culture, just awful woke corporate propaganda from cradle to grave.
