I can't find most of the links I saved by using a search engine, and I think that's part of the problem.
- rukshn 5y agoI think the core part of this bookmark problem and dilemma is the fact that browsers execute their bookmarking functionality poorly.
- srcreigh 5y agoWhy would Google ever implement decent bookmarks aka local search for all your data? They need to track you for their business.
- rukshn 5y agoYes that is true of course. But at least forks of Chrome, FF, can try to implement a decent bookmarking feature in their browser. Maybe FF is not doing it because they own pocket. But true there is conflict of interest that I didn't see until I read your comment.
- srcreigh 5y agoEven FF receives lots of money from Google every year to be default search engine. It's pure speculation but I wonder if the threat of not getting that deal next year is enough that FF doesn't invest in Pocket/bookmarks too much.
- bryans 5y agoThe bookmarks would have the same title that a search engine uses, so I'm not sure why it would be more difficult. Could you provide an example?
- _dain_ 5y agoI just save webpages I find interesting and throw them all into a single folder. When I want to find something I use grep. This beats link rot.
- sodimel 5y agoThis is an interesting concept, but it lacks the "share what you find" idea that's behind my vision of the web :P
- zenkat 5y ago100% this. I casually read a huge amount of interesting technical/business info on the web. But when I want to use that knowledge later (say in a business presentation or technical design), it's nearly impossible to find the original webpage! I can remember the basic idea, but I can't turn it into search terms that are precise enough for Google. ("What was the name of that programming law about tearing down fences?") What I want is the ability to constrain my searches by pages I've personally visited. Even better would be able to "star" pages to say "this is good, rank higher in future personal searches". Has anyone built that yet? Why or why not?
