Mac malware spreading for ~14 months installs backdoor on infected systems
- eyelidlessness 5y agoWhat’s fascinating to me is how rudimentary some of its mechanisms are—social engineering, using well-known officially supported interfaces like LaunchAgents/LaunchDaemons—juxtaposed with a portrayal of (increasing) sophistication which, while true in the sense discussed in the article, feels hyperbolic depending on the audience’s understanding of that nuance. And while Ars is another tech site, with a disproportionately tech-savvy readership, it’s positioned for a significantly more mainstream audience than (say) HN. (As in Ars articles frequently explain concepts that are often taken as prior/trivially absorbed knowledge here.) This isn’t necessarily a criticism of the article, it’s clear and balances the details well. I just find it interesting.
