Is CGI considered an automation that reduces overall production cost? I am not sure whether it is or not, but I wonder if it has become much cheaper over time.

Is CGI considered an automation that reduces overall production cost? I am not sure whether it is or not, but I wonder if it has become much cheaper over time. I remember a time when CGI in movies was a thing of wonder, at least it was to me in the 90's. Nowadays I definitely see the Blah-ness of it. But that said I find action movies extremely boring and unrealistic, so I'm out of the loop.
