CGI is to movies as autotune is to music or makeup is to beauty. When you have a solid base, and merely use these things to clean up a few rough edges, it works wonderfully. When you destroy any sense of realism or humanity under an entirely synthetic facade... yeah, nobody's buying it, it destroys the emersion, and it all looks / sounds the same after awhile.
- TremendousJudge 5y ago>nobody's buying it The top grossing films of the last decade disagree with this take. Many people are, in fact, buying it. We might not like it for aesthetic reasons, but you can't argue that it doesn't sell.
- andrewclunn 5y agoI meant that colloquially, as in nobody buys that it's real (even when the attempt is to pass it off as being so).
- sleepybrett 5y agoSure, when I sit my ass down at the latest marvel movie I'm not there for 'reality'. Reality is, generally speaking, the domain of documentaries.
- greedo 5y agoWhen I first watched Star Wars in 1977, I knew that the spaceships weren't real, that Luke didn't live on Tatooine with a landspeeder, or that lightsabers worked. I didn't care because of the "willing suspension of disbelief." We all know that the movies we watch are fake, Potemkin villages. We don't care if they use the film-making arts to help us suspend our disbelief. Doesn't matter if they use CGI, stop-motion animation, matte paintings, shoot on soundstage or in real locations.
