I also made an social network but I went other way around: 1) everything (except direct messages and internal realtime chat between our users) is visible and public 2) users are encouraged to use pseudonyms I also don't want to make product out of users, but currently there is no monetization scheme at all. It's currently semi-open beta for invited individuals (AKA you need to ask me for invite code). I started it when austrian social network Soup.io closed it doors.
