I don't much about the tech behind Tesla, but as an engineer I'd never trust a "self-driving" car without lidar. This has nothing to do with the stop sign issue , but the absence of lidar gives me the sense that tesla is trying cut corners to get to something that's merely good enough. Waymo and cruise seem to be way ahead despite Musk's promises.
