The creator of MySQL named it after his daughter, "My". After it was forked, the fork was named after his other daughter, "Maria".
He has three children, so we've got one more go at this with a MaxDB if needed.
edit: I was wrong -- He already used MaxDB previously. We're out of names.
- ab_testing 5y agoHe just needs to have another kid.
- c0brac0bra 5y agoI'm pulling for "RickyDB"
- CoastalCoder 5y agoSorry, I know that explaining a joke makes it less funny, but would you mind? I'm really curious now.
- golergka 5y agoWhat's wrong with BobbyTables?
- jonathankoren 5y agoIt has poor security and storage instability. ;)
- mrweasel 5y agoThat had to be a difficult talk at the dinner table: Sorry My, but you have to go live with uncle Larry now.
- cyberpunk 5y agoLucky Monty, he got to sell it twice!
- tpmx 5y agoSun paid $1B the first time (in 2008).
- MangoCoffee 5y agoLOL. you ain't wrong
- slim 5y agoWho said opensource can't be profitable ?
- fullstop 5y agoHe did create MaxDB as part of MySQL AB, so one could say that he got the Full Monty.
- JJMcJ 5y agoDon't forget cousin Postgres.
- CoastalCoder 5y agoNow I'm wondering where Oracle and DB2 would be in that family tree.
- TremendousJudge 5y agoThe part of the family that isn't on speaking terms anymore
- RedShift1 5y agoAbusive uncle for Oracle seems apt to me.
- diego_sandoval 5y agoAnd his son, little Bobby Tables.
- schnevets 5y agoAnd that mischievous brat who lives down the street, Mongo.
- stjohnswarts 5y agoI bet they all went to Berkley U.
- fomine3 5y agoI don't want call Cockroach second cousin.

- Eric_WVGG 5y agoWow. I've spent a lifetime vaguely hating MySQL because I'm bothered by computer software that projects first-person pronouns onto users (Microsoft Windows "My Computer" — um, no, Windows, you're not me, if you're addressing me, it's "Your Computer"). I'm going to be spending a long while contemplating this. My. That's so sweet.
- macksd 5y agoYou misunderstand - the computer belongs to Windows.
- omgmajk 5y agoThe pronunciation of the name My, or Y in Swe/Fin is somewhat different from English, it's hard to write down what it sounds like but you can use google translate to get somewhat the right thing. Here, the word yxa (axe) comes close. https://translate.google.com/?sl=sv&tl=en&text=yxa&op=translate https://translate.google.com/?sl=sv&tl=en&text=yxa&op=transl... Edit: Found someone saying the name My, as in Lilla My from the moomins https://forvo.com/word/lilla_my/ https://forvo.com/word/lilla_my/
- stonecharioteer 5y agoHoly shit. I have been on Linux for 17 years and while I've used Windows for work, I'd forgotten that the file explorer launcher is named My Computer since the first thing I do is remove all desktop icons. That brought back so many weird memories.
- tromp 5y agoMaxDB [1] is already a thing. [1] https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Widenius#Personal_life https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Michael_Widenius#Personal_life

- me_me_mu_mu 5y agoHis final one should just be YourSQL. I'm having trouble with YourSQL, but its now MySQL problem :(
- stjohnswarts 5y agoAre there any grandkids? Surely someone is procreating to make sure we won't run out of names.
