Mine has a little compartment where I put in a block of pressed powder (a "tab") and then close it. If I want more, I put in 2 tabs. If I want none, I put in no tab. If I want my dishes to smell like soup, I put in a buillon cube. (Not recommended by whoever built the Dishwasher)
