He had a chance to try to lose 80 pounds in six months, but didn't try because "it’s not the most healthy thing in the world to do".
Things that are more dangerous than losing weight at three pounds per week for 26 weeks: 1) not losing weight, 2) going to space and back in a rocket ship.
If his risk aversion is such that he wishes to avoid losing weight at perhaps slightly faster than optimal, then he is being quite consistent to give away the rocket ship ticket. He's exercising ordinary prudence with a little face saving explanation. I do envy his friend.

I am currently following a diet that has resulted in a 35 pound weight loss (265 to 230) over two months. I think the fatter you are, the easier it is to achieve these kinds of figures.
- pknomad 5y agoWell... it does come out to smidge over 3lb/week weight loss. Most healthy weight loss puts a cap at 2lb/week so he's not wrong. I understand your sentiment though.
- zeristor 5y agoHow does the risk compare to the actual rocket launch itself?
