I wonder how well the average person (particularly those who doesn't listen to much classical music, but even those who listen to it casually but regularly) can distinguish between a fine musician and a great musician. Say, a 21-year-old still in a music conservatory and this man.
Perhaps I'm underestimating, but I suspect that most people wouldn't be able to easily tell that the person playing classical music in the subway was a master vs just someone who could play technically well, in the same way that they couldn't tell if they were beaten at chess by their local shark at the park or a GM.
On my end, I have the same problem with actors in movies. I find it bewildering to imagine how the nominees for "best actor" are picked each year, because above a certain level (i.e. not including the obviously bad actors) everyone seems to ceiling-out for me, and they all just seem to be equally capable actors who have just been given better or worse parts. Obviously I recognize that this is just something I'm missing.
