Speech therapist sees 364% increase in patient referrals of babies and toddlers
- marstall 5y ago"The Post Millennial is a conservative Canadian online news magazine started in 2017. It publishes national and local news and has a large amount of opinion content. It has been criticized for publishing false stories and COVID-19 disinformation,[1][2][3] as well as for its opaque funding and political connections.[4][5]" https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Post_Millennial https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Post_Millennial
- missedthecue 5y agoThat organization is obviously sharing this in their social media because the findings here promote their worldview, but the reporting is not done by them, it's done by WPBF news, an ABC affiliate owned by NYC-based Hearst Television. While I can't find them on any bias-meter, they have an official relationship with PolitiFact, which should speak for itself.
- ComradePhil 5y agoI hope everyone remembers when the authorities and the media were telling us that we are too stupid to use the masks correctly so the general population shouldn't be using it. This was early 2020. And I am aware of Paul Graham's submarine (and Tim Wu's books and Edward Bernay's work force that matter)... What I don't understand is what happened afterwards when masks became political and discussed everywhere. Where is this coming from? Who is pushing it and benefiting from it? Right before the pandemic, attention to plastic straws was a thing in mainstream media, but I haven't seen anything about the environmental impact of the masks, most of which are made with plastics which take 400 years to degrade (compare that to straws which take 200 years). If plastic straw thing was purely environmental, there would be a push for cloth masks or masks made with biodegradable material from the same people, right? Does anyone have any ideas to what is happening?
- jimmygrapes 5y agoI'm holding out some hope that this mask behavior and associated paranoia (where it is unwarranted - I am fine with it when it is actually appropriate) doesn't royally screw up kids, but... it's tough. Nobody seems to wants to study it in a scientific fashion because it's new, it's temporary, it's no big deal according to [unrelated previous data/assumptions]. You can find or hear uncountable anecdotes about older (but still young) kids feeling somehow wrong about not wearing masks, of infants screaming in "fear" when they see a full face without a mask, and all kinds of similar scary things. And since we as a society trust science and castigate anyone who doesn't, these anecdotes are absolutely useless trash because they weren't properly controlled or recorded. Doesn't change when my friend's 4yo daughter broke into tears when she was told she didn't have to wear a mask at the zoo we were all visiting, because, in her words, "I hate if people see my mouth" Ain't lookin' good from my perspective,.
- actuallyalys 5y agoThe concern definitely seems to be founded [2] because lipreading is an important part of language acquisition, but there's not a lot of evidence. A fact check by Reuters says that the experts they spoke to were not aware of evidence that masks lead to increased speech impairment [0] and links to one study [1] that shows they do not interfere.
