Rather than 1x cluster with 4k nodes it might be better to use 4x clusters with 1k nodes. You've now lowered the blast radius of any change to the apiserver and at PayPal scale you'll already be dealing with multi region which would mean you already have the tooling to do this.
- bushbaba 5y agoYou also enable an update to the k8s control plane in just 1/4th that infra. However as you get into the many tens of thousands of nodes. And workloads needing 500+ dedicated nodes to run. A 4K+ node cluster solves a lot of stranded capacity issues.
