Why Do I Look Like This? The SexyCyborg Origin Story [video]
- miiiiiike 5y agoLove this. I grew up in a dying Midwestern town. I also identify as trash. You know you know Natasha Leggero, the comedian with the worldly/you’re not better than me just because I’m trash persona, grew up about a mile from me. If I’m not careful I can feel very out of place in NYC, SF, and London. Especially Silicon Valley. Always remember: they’re not better than you just because you’re trash. It’s hard to deny your trash roots. Pretending you’re not trash or anything else that you’re not is really taxing. My trash roots mean I work harder now than I would if things had been more open to me. I didn’t know what MIT or Stanford were before I was 17. Didn’t even apply. Investors being serially unimpressed with my background hasn’t stopped me from being good at what I do. It also means I have no problem telling the Emperors that their new clothes have some issues. Irks them right up until the “chatbots/hype-thing-from-4-years-ago was a bad idea” blog posts start rolling out. Not being yourself sucks. Not squeaking up sucks more. If it isn’t working for you, stop doing it.
