- AstroJetson 5y agoEstimates are 2,700 to 3,000 trucks. Most of them are not 18 wheelers but pick up style trucks. Most of the people are from the Ottawa area. According to the news reports they started coming into town and just parking in the middle of the streets. Current temps are -10F going to 12F on Sunday. It will be interesting to see how long the protest lasts in that kind of weather.
- VancouverMan 5y ago-10 °C isn't unusual for Ottawa and surrounding areas at this time of the year. Even -25 °C is something most people who live in the region would be expecting and prepared to experience at various points throughout a typical winter.
- Rendello 5y agoIt's been an unusually chilly January: https://twitter.com/YOW_Weather https://twitter.com/YOW_Weather Which is surprising, as the Rideau Canal opened for skating quite late this year.
- ACalgaryMan 5y agoWas there perhaps a typo in this? >-10 °C isn't unusual for Ottawa The parent comment was measuring in Fahrenheit >Current temps are -10 °F Conversion for the metric people: -10 °F is -23 °C
- armagon 5y agoI've heard reports of tens of thousands of trucks. It's a shame the highway cameras were turned off. I see claimed that the Ontario Provincial Police say there are 100k to 130k trucks, but I can't see anything official to back that up -- nothing on their twitter feed or website. Maybe on the radio -- but not something I can easily check. Here's someone on the ground who thinks there are 250k to 1 million people protesting in Ottawa right now. https://twitter.com/JuliusRuechel/status/1487570992356634625?s=20&t=S3tfFCpecU-iJoU_3zGDdg https://twitter.com/JuliusRuechel/status/1487570992356634625...
- somuchdata 5y agoFor the curious, this is a source with an obvious vested interest: “ My guestimate is upwards of 500k as of 4pm Sat, maybe as high as 1M. It's the most beautiful thing I've seen. It has restored my faith in this country. Let's keep this party going!”
- fooster 5y agoLol. Opp reported 18 trailer trucks and about a total of 500 vehicles.
- Rendello 5y agoThe population of Ottawa is 1 million. As someone in Ottawa, there are trucks blaring their horns downtown, but not a million protesters.
- moistly 5y agoThose are absolutely delusional claims.
- Rendello 5y agoI live in Ottawa. There are a lot of protests in the capital, but as protests go they usually: 1. Don't involve too many non-locals; and 2. Don't involve vehicles (ie. everyone's on foot). The protest has broadened into an anti-mandate message, but it's original purpose of "truckers driving to Ottawa to protest vaccine mandates" allowed for a much bigger (and noisier) turnout despite weak local support. - raintrees 5y agoThat link's image is quite a contrast to a few videos I have seen, such as these two: https://youtu.be/W1BMkp2vlo0 https://youtu.be/W1BMkp2vlo0 https://youtu.be/3_YlKDu_lgM https://youtu.be/3_YlKDu_lgM There does seem to be a significant push to provide conflicting narratives...
- Rendello 5y agoThe image is to illustrate the size of a group of people on foot vs in vehicles. There are plenty of protests on foot in Ottawa every year but they go largely unnoticed.
- suckmore 5y agoHere's a birds eye view of the protest for anyone trying to compute convoy length based the parents figure. https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FKT2vVvXMAQODLX?format=jpg&name=4096x4096 https://pbs.twimg.com/media/FKT2vVvXMAQODLX?format=jpg&name=...
