I own a Valve Index and it's a well built piece of hardware. The controllers are fantastic, especially with games that properly support the grip mechanics (eg into the radius).
I owned the steam deck and controller in the past, and while the software needed evolution, the hardware was good. The controller had some daring ideas that sometimes worked, sometimes did not.
In both cases, Valve took risks by trying something different. The controller with no joysticks, and the index controllers strapping to your hands. It gives me confidence in the steam deck; they've learned a lot about what works and how to deliver it. And they're clearly not afraid of taking risks to deliver something great.
