Banks that didn't carry out due diligence ought to be on the hook for any fraud. Anecdotally, sales of 'off the shelf' companies (dormant but already registered businesses) went through the roof at this time and any bank lending money to such an outfit, to my mind, was complicit in the fraud.
I do know of some viable businesses that manged to survive as a result of the lifeline that was offered but I also know of a few that were already on the ropes and all the grants and loans simply delayed the inevitable.
As a former Barclays business customer, I can also confirm that every resource was diverted to dishing out these bounce back loans - at the expense of regular businesses that simply needed basic banking services.
Would you believe it took me 6 weeks to get my business address changed?

- dazc 5y agoCrazy but true. How long does it take a bank to check whether a previously dormant company has suddenly sprung to life, I wonder? One minute, I would guess. https://www.gov.uk/get-information-about-a-company https://www.gov.uk/get-information-about-a-company
