Student says he was offered $5K by Elon Musk to stop tracking his private jet
- josephcsible 5y agoDo people think it's okay to stalk people via their cars in this way, just because their license plates are publicly visible? If not, then why would doing the same to any other type of vehicle be okay?
- WaxedChewbacca 5y agoBeing young is all about lack of perspective, lack of experience about how things can go wrong. I was able to do all kinds of things long before I was able to make good decisions about what I actually should do.
- sharken 5y agoCars do not have transponders that publicly transmit data, so that comparison doesn't work. A better analogy is phone numbers, where you can have a number that's not listed in the public registry. But as long as the data is public, this is what you get, even though owners of private jets don't like it. It does seem like there are some options for hiding ADS-B data. https://www.flyingmag.com/faa-privacy-for-ads-b/ https://www.flyingmag.com/faa-privacy-for-ads-b/ https://jetstreamlaw.com/minimizing-access-to-ads-b-data/ https://jetstreamlaw.com/minimizing-access-to-ads-b-data/

But of course this could enable other tracking methods I used to track planes around my house and I sometimes have seen some that were not broadcasting a signal... Maybe Elon needs to look into that. https://mobile.twitter.com/ElonJet https://mobile.twitter.com/ElonJet
