The statement is completely false. People typically do not need to buy a new charger every time they buy a new phone.
And as far as USB-C is concerned - it’s a complete mess that will not solve the problem, See the link. Of course this will force most people to buy a new charger since most phones are not yet USB-C.
If anyone can provide a quantitative analysis of the cost of imposing this vs the cost of allowing the market to continue as it currently is, then this can be taken seriously.
Otherwise it’s just political sloganeering turned into a dishonest piece of legislation.
- giuliomagnifico 5y agoThe statement doesn’t said people need to buy a new phone for every new phone, it says that you will not have to buy a different charger when you buy a new phone. For example, now my phone is the iPhone 11 with USB-A to lightning cable and charger, if I buy “X Android phone” with fast charging, it has USB-C to USB-C , then I’ll need to buy a new charger for my office charger because I have only USB A charger for the iPhone. EU want to stop that this situation will happen in the future and they want to force brands to use only one standard. I’m not saying that this is correct (I think that imposing a standard can damage the future development) but the statement is not “completely false”. You’re reading it wrong.
- zepto 5y ago> The statement doesn’t said people need to buy a new phone for every new phone, You are wrong. That is literally what the statement says. Look again: > no longer needed to buy a new charger every time you purchase a new mobile phone The statement is false. I quoted it directly from the page.
