A world-class competitor to Android or iOS would require world-class telecommunications and manufacturing infrastructure; that said, China, arguably up to the task, has yet to produce their own green-field alternative. Read of that what you will, in terms of the scale (and state) of effort required.
Homegrown modem ICs and an Android enablement stack that competes with Qualcomm on performance would be IMHO a better place to start.
- smt88 5y agoIt's neither an engineering consideration nor a matter of pride. It's a way to make citizens' devices easier to control. India is among the most censorious countries, and the current regime is openly nationalistic and also moving toward authoritarianism. Having digital control of money and then citizens' smartphones makes it much, much easier to control the country.
