Here We Go Again
- cosmojg 5y agoFrom personal experience alone, I'm tempted to believe that all of psychology is just habits and metahabits. Of course, given the existence of an entire field dedicated to its study, I'm sure it's a bit more than that.
- MauranKilom 5y ago> Do you get stressed about all the preparations of showing up at the airport with everything you need? Yes, quite a lot. > If the [scripts] you have are working for you, you’ve discovered a reliable way to succeed and find satisfaction as you do. But if they’re not, it might pay to spend the energy to approach the next cycle, ‘as if’. I don't know, does "the prospect of vacation is anxiety-inducing" count as "works for me"? > What if you could leave the script behind, just this one time? [...] Rewrite the script, rewrite the outcome. Not sure if "you miss your flight" is the outcome I'm looking for... Point being, some of these "scripts" are the result of lessons learned. Possibly quite painful ones. "Ignore that for once" is both good and terrible advice. But yes, it probably pays to think about these ingrained responses from time to time.
- madrox 5y agoI don't believe the message here is to ignore the lesson, but to consider rethinking your responses if your responses are leaving you less than fulfilled. Over time, people develop rote strategies in response to lessons learned. We forget there's more than one way to tackle things. This is, ultimately, where "choice" inserts itself in life.
- erikerikson 5y agoPerhaps flying isn't necessary for a satisfying and restorative vacation. Rewriting the script of what you think of when you consider vacation could be part of it. If you will continue flying, consider whether how you think of flying leads to the negative emotional experiences you may associate with it. For many things our minds race ahead to what they "just mean" but if that is giving you heartburn, perhaps it's worth reconfiguring your formulation of the consideration. Said differently, the solutions you've developed assume the frame under which the problem was originally experienced. I don't expect ignoring the solutions is the advice so much as rethinking your model of the circumstance in the first place.
- orliesaurus 5y agoMaybe I am too illiterate for this kind of blogpost but I simply don't get it. What's the point of it? Not being stressed out?
- butwhywhyoh 5y agoYou're not the only one, trust me. Came away with zero value after reading it twice.
- Mandatum 5y agoI don’t understand why this is getting upvotes. Maybe I’m an idiot?
- cecilpl2 5y agoTake a step back from your immediate experience. Observe your behavior, your reactions, your emotions. Realize that all of those are programmed, and that you can (with some effort) rewrite the programming to better suit you.
- klipt 5y agoIn a word, mindfulness.
- erikerikson 5y agoI found it to be about repeated patterns that we find to have suboptimal outcomes. It is noting that we should notice what patterns (distributed between ourselves and our environment, inclusive of people) we engage in and evaluate whether we like them or would prefer them to be altered. When we would, it suggests, we should.
- mromanuk 5y agoHe is talking about “rule governed behavior”, which are “stories” that we tell ourselves on how we should behave. Seth is asking to challenge those rules, specially those that are not useful for us. As a first step, you can try to be aware of your own rules

- jareklupinski 5y agoIf there's something in my life that I can turn into a script... I commit the script to a repo and host it somewhere publicly accessible :) Then move on to the next interesting thing...
- chasil 5y agoI wrote a script to rotate SSH keys. This was the best that I could do. https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/ssh-key-rotation-posix-shell-sunset-nears-elderly-keys https://www.linuxjournal.com/content/ssh-key-rotation-posix-... It's a complicated procedure, and I've found a few improvements. There is some value in the wisdom of the original article. Perhaps I should not have done it this way.
- sofixa 5y agoYep, you should have used SSH certificates :)
- maerF0x0 5y agoI think script here is more like in the movie/theatre sense. > She’s going to give you some feedback. Is your first reaction to be defensive, or to lean into the goodwill that’s being offered? I really liked this one in reflection to how so many code reviews seem to go down.
- paulpauper 5y agoThis guy's success is proof that connections, timing/being early is more important than content/ability.
- sysadm1n 5y agoThis is called a 'pattern interrupt'. You can apply pattern interrupts to daily life such as choosing a new route to walk each day, or when computing, choosing to work on a new OS to try it out. Variety is the spice of life!
