Show HN: Replace “NFT” with “silly JPEG” while browsing
Hey HN,
Years ago PanicSteve wrote a hilarious Chrome extension to replace all instances of "Cloud" with "Butt".
This year, I got annoyed at seeing inane NFT articles everywhere. Thus, NFT-to-Silly-JPEG was born.
Repo above or Chrome Web Store: https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nft-to-silly-jpeg/hcajgiblhhpbgbmlgioljefhmoolebjn https://chrome.google.com/webstore/detail/nft-to-silly-jpeg/...
- PaulHoule 5y agoThey don't use WebP?
- quickthrower2 5y agoWebP is also a silly jpeg
- dragontamer 5y agoExcept NFTs aren't JPEG typically. Its often just a URL-link. NFTs are basically a marketplace to trade "ownership" of URL-links. And a lot of people can't seem to tell me what "ownership" really means in this context (aside from I paid X money for it).
- emteycz 5y agoIt's not about ownership of the URL. It's about ownership of the token itself - the interesting thing is who issued it, how it got to you. Think downloading photocopied Mona Lisa VS obtaining the original directly from Leonardo VS buying the original from a second party. NFT is a certificate that says "this party minted it" and then people do transactions with that. People buy ugly or useless stuff just for the sentimental value of the transaction itself all the time (museum/zoo coins or signed photos, for example), NFT is just that but digitized.
- easytiger 5y agoThat's a lot of words just to say "investment scam"
- drblue 5y agoLiquidity position "Silly JPEG"? Domain name "Silly JPEG"? Doesn't work. NFTs don't necessarily have off chain URL-links (Uniswap v3 positions). Most of the interesting uses of NFTs aren't about an image.
- quickthrower2 5y agoCurious, and you need not reply (so as to not break the streak) but your last 4 comments are each 3 to 4 years apart!
- mrpf1ster 5y agoI see no nuance lost in this translation ;). Seems like you’ve peeved some NFT enthusiasts.
