Why Rust Might Attract More Developers Than Java or Even JavaScript
- PaulHoule 5y agoI want to believe it but I find it very hard to believe. I find it painful to watch people struggle to write very simple programs in Rust such as the Unix command line utilities from Software Tools by Kernighan and Plauger. For most programs the performance you give up going to Java or Javascript is a good trade for safe automatic memory allocation. My son is learning to code to follow his own interests and I wouldn't even consider telling him to learn Rust even if he might get some performance gain from it. Personally I'd like to see a different take on the not-quite-a-HLL space that C revealed such as an integrated macro assembler and theorem prover.
- garbagecoder 5y agoThere is a market for the elevator pitch Rust pitches, but when you actually sit down and use it, some of the shine wears off. It's a decent modern language and I'm sure quite useful, but I don't think it will do what its evangelists think it will.
- hgomersall 5y agoHow much have you used it? For me it just got shinier and shinier once over the (significant) initial hump.
