I took classes my senior year in college. I started out with a class crosslisted in bio/engineering that used Matlab to interact with a circuit we built. The instructor included a lot of basic code for each project that we just had to improve on to get things working. It wasn't too daunting and Matlab is a nice place to start to get a handle on basic principles. Then I took data structures and programming because I liked that first class so much. In between the two classes I taught myself from material for a 1 credit course that converted matlab people to Java.
