As someone who has spent years creating music and entertainment materials to promote my label music, it's gut wrenching to see how exhaustingly impossible it is to reach people through honest and organic means. That being said, I'd much rather have natural growth even at the cost of failure because I feel it's a bit more authentic and rewarding to succeed without resorting to complex and quite questionable industry tricks.
This documentary shows that there are real people and passions behind promotional efforts, but these efforts have also destroyed so much of what made music discovery a special and rewarding thing.
After seeing this episode of Black Market (With the late Michael K. Williams hosting), I figure it's a timely topic to discuss and find better solutions for musicians to be heard. If even big industry is resorting to these practices only money wins, but music we listen to will suffer greatly, and become even more synthetic, sterilized, and generic than it all is right now.
There's also great bits on bots in retail and social media promotion as well. Watching this show has greatly helped to ease my mind on the very abstract and undercover world of modern scams. I sleep much better now knowing how those kinds of schemes work and that they're not for me.
