Configuring cloud is likely more complicated than configuring a few VPS because its configuration interface designed for large scale deployments and corporate/government needs. Cloud scales, not just in terms of compute and storage capacity but it can also address your growing org demands. For example
- Protect data flowing thru the wire such that another server sitting on the same wire cannot eavesdrop.
- Control access to servers and resources.
- Force configuration policies.
- Keep audit logs of what people do on your servers in a tamper resistant way.
- Have single sign on into multiple apps
- So on an so forth.
All that can be done by a competent admin/dev/devops but it takes nontrivial amount of time to setup and maintain. Having solutions integrated into your cloud of choice is a huge time saver.
