If NATO doesn't do some posturing, yeah, Russia might not stop in Ukraine. Ar-least I recall that being the analysis in 2014. Since then NATO has been posturing, by rotating troops through it's eastern member countries. I'm guessing posturing is a lot cheaper than war. So I don't mind if smart people say that's a good idea.
