SV very much benefitted from 1950s and 60s military research funding (most prominently represented in Bell Labs and CC). VC funding is a secondary step, first, you need strong research centers.
The next SV will be wherever there is a critical mass of well-educated youngsters and a political will to create a technology cluster using the present human capital (and pulling in local talent with attractive places to live). My bet is somewhere in central India or near Guangzhou.
- throwawaynay 5y agoWhy would smart people want to live in terribly polluted places? There isn't a single job on earth that is worth dying of lung cancer.
- somanchill 5y agolol step out bro
- DocTomoe 5y agoI hate to break it to you, but the Bay Area in the 1960s was not exactly a national park [1], no matter what biopics about early Silicon Valley and Summer-of-Love-documentaries wants you to believe. Also, people tend to go where they see an improvement of life conditions. For some places on earth, that means a flat of your own, running water, basic sanitation and the theoretical availability of romantic partners outside of more traditional modes of couple-making. - somanchill 5y agoInteresting, so you kinda imagine a resurgence of India and China to be an innovation cluster. Matt Ridley had also said something like this -https://www.rationaloptimist.com/blog/innovation-is-localized/ https://www.rationaloptimist.com/blog/innovation-is-localize...
