Lawyers Allege Google deceived consumers about how it profits from location data
- matheusmoreira 5y agoWhat they really need to crack down on is these abusive user agreements. Almost nobody ever reads these things, they just check the box because the form won't let them sign up otherwise. The few who read probably won't understand the full implications of what they are agreeing to.
- nescioquid 5y agoEspecially when you are required to click through after money has already changed hands. They also provide the ability for the vendor to unilaterally change the "agreement" at any time subsequently, which calls into question the extent to which any of it is actually an agreement at all.
- matheusmoreira 5y agoYeah. It's not actually an agreement, it's an imposition. They're leveraging their market position to impose extremely unfavorable conditions on users. They know they'll sign up anyway. Who would ever refuse WhatsApp's unilateral contract changes? They'd be completely cut off from their entire social circle.
- lupire 5y agoIf the pressure comes from other users, sue them!
- lupire 5y agoGov can take a fine and force extra disclosures, but at the end of the day everyone is going to keep location services on because they like the features more than they dislike leaking location. AGs say one thing, but Legislatures aren't passing GDPR laws (except CA, in part)
