You should know that due to license incompatibilities (CDDL and GPLv2), it's not really as smooth as the BSD integration (I wonder how Canonical avoids this issue). You know that OpenZFS's codebase is a monorepo (for the most part) but the in-kernel implementation is vastly different.
- mnd999 5y agoAFAIK, Canonical are just hoping nobody sues them. I use Zfs as my boot file system on FreeBSD and Arch Linux and both work great. Linux was a bit of a faff to set up though, FreeBSD was easy.
- quags 5y agoI have found this too. ZFS on root just works, no hacks needed to set it up on freebsd.
- trasz 5y agoThe issue isn’t any different from using closed source NVidia drivers with FreeBSD kernel.

There's a significant difference between almost all devices and essential devices like storage: you need to have the storage online as soon as possible, graphics are purely optional in the boot process. If you only use ZFS as "external" storage, sure it's effectively not different but as a boot drive?
- trasz 5y agoHow is it related to license incompatibility?
