I started out just trying to minimize my upkeep so that I could, as I did before, write software I felt good about writing rather than software I felt bad about writing. For a while, I thought I could do both, but I realized eventually that I only have so much "programming juice" to work with, and after a day of doing software dev for advertising and investment banks and other such stuff, there was almost none left for me to do my own thing.
