Hedonism Is Overrated
- Barrin92 5y agoOne can argue with two points in the article. First one is a flawed notion of Hedonism. Hedonism properly understood is not debauched partying as much as it centers around what Epicurus called Ataraxia. A state of tranquility or calmness, free of fear, pain or suffering. It's more akin to detachedness or avoiding goal-seeking that people today associate with say, Buddhism. Second point is that it's not so simple to distinguish between what is hedonistic and what is meaningful. The article gives war as an example, but I'd say a lot of people don't find meaning in war at all, they join war because of desperation, thrill-seeking, and self-destructiveness and as an outlet for violence. Which sounds dangerously close to the worst forms of hedonism.
