I've had mixed experiences working with staff engineers. Some of them are great. Others seem to think having a "staff engineer" title means whatever they come up with is always correct; and when I point out problems, they double down and refuse to acknowledge they've made a mistake. :( So, I think the growth of these titles is a dangerous trend, unless there are effective mechanisms to keep staff engineers accountable for how they use their authority.
