Not an expert, but I presume this depends on the use case, and the precision required. For input to a robot's RANSAC/Kalman filter location stack? Machine vision might very well be fine. But I'm guessing LIDAR will be used in recording of as-built environment where millimeter precision is preferred for quite a time still.
