When I first went to Paris I started with a boat ride along the Seine. I was flabbergasted by the beauty of the city. When at the end of the 90 min ride we turned the last turn and I saw the Eiffel Tower it was the biggest disappointment — it looked like a rusty nail in the Victorian painting. It looks nice when lighted at night though.

Consider that it was the first structure to be built by engineers, not architects (that’s revolutionary) and it gave a top-down view of the city, something never possible before. We take all of this for granted much like we take most of modern life for granted. But the Eiffel Tower marked the beginning of modernism. Look at a lot of visual art from that era - it features the Eiffel Tower for instance. It was a shocking structure for its time. It was the beginning of the mechanical and Industrial Age. Just fascinating.
