Battery Breakthrough Provides Five Times the Range of L-Ion at Lower Price
- aksss 5y agoI wouldn’t hold my breath. Here’s a similar breakthrough two years ago: https://spectrum.ieee.org/amp/lithium-sulfur-battery-news-ev-electric-vehicle-range-2650279508 https://spectrum.ieee.org/amp/lithium-sulfur-battery-news-ev... A steady 2%-3% y/y improvement in batteries is the trend, I believe. 5x improvement to industrial packages represents an extraordinary claim if a not miracle. This article seems like bad science reporting - taking a theoretical maximum energy density of Li-S batteries in the lab and thinking that because the cathode can be preserved longer in this design, it means a 5x capacity improvement delivered. Improving the longevity of the cathode is an improvement, but Li-S batteries still have a lot of issues to be resolved before they show up in a production cars or your phone.
- bradknowles 5y ago5x is an extraordinary claim. And extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I see no such extraordinary evidence here. IMO, they can put up or shut up. Those are their only two options.
- entropicgravity 5y agoAnd remember there is a technology (based on radioactivity) that has very high energy density but can only deliver that energy very slowly so use cases are limited.
- landemva 5y agoA 5x improvement in energy density would open up new use cases. It would also require more consideration of heat dispersion. Even small L-ion battery pack fires are startling.
