Why would you need several offers if the new job will be paying less than your current position? Can’t you just tell them how much you make and ask them to match that in equity?
- localcrisis 5y agoYou can, but when you're making that much above what a series A or B company pays, it's not a useful number. Having multiple offers that are comparable is what matters. A company can go ±5% but it's not like they offer you $180k and you give them your $800k Facebook total comp then they're like, "oh, I guess we'll give you $800k then."
- ptero 5y agoI doubt many (any?) startups would match FB's 10-year senior engineer's total comp. That would burn up the startup's cash (and/or ownership) very quickly. I think the main draws at a startup for a post-FAANG senior engineer are feeling good about the product they build (more useful to the world than FB's ads) or the role/environment (less bureaucracy and org process). I am sure there are many exceptions, but I suspect that after 10 years in a senior role at a FAANG money stops being the most important thing you need from a job. My 2c.
- trangon 5y agoI’d assume after ten years at FAANG, you’d have a decent amount of money saved up as well.
